The Committee of the Wimbledon Philosophical Society is working on future events with local potential speakers, authors, and poets. We have two important speakers in view for the next couple of months. However the details are not yet confirmed – watch this space!
Usually we have 4 or 5 live speaker events each year in addition to a Summer Garden Party with poetry in June/July and an AGM in October followed by a speaker.

- Detlev S Schlichter “Paper money collapse” 06 October 26, venue to be confirmed.
Detlev Schlichter is an author and Austrian School Economist. His first book Paper Money Collapse – The Folly of Elastic Money and the Coming Monetary Breakdown was published in September 2011. He had a 19-year career in investment management, having worked among others at J.P. Morgan and Merrill Lynch. During his career Mr. Schlichter has overseen billions in assets under management for institutional clients from around the world. He left the industry in 2009 to focus exclusively on his first book, Paper Money Collapse.
Mr. Schlichter holds a degree in economics from Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany. He lives with his family in North London.

- Professor Edward Harcourt “Ethics in AI” in November 26 (no firm date yet)
Professor Edward Harcourt MBE, Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI, is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Keble College.
From 2018 to 2022 he was Director of Research, Strategy and Innovation at UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), where he helped to develop the Council’s flagship ‘Bridging Responsible AI Divides’ programme, played an early role in AHRC’s partnership with the Ada Lovelace Institute, and gave evidence to the Committee on Standards in Public Life AI and Public Standards Report (2020).
His academic expertise lies at the boundary of ethics and the philosophy of mind, an intellectual foundation he brings to questions of AI governance and human agency. At the Institute for Ethics and AI, he is committed to building the Institute’s relationships not only within the university – with the Philosophy Faculty, with Computer Science, with the wider Humanities Division and beyond – but also with government and private enterprise, so the Institute’s work both has a secure foundation in independent research and the real-world impact it deserves.

Adam Gee is a British film, television, and digital producer, writer, and commissioner. He has won over 90 international awards, including six BAFTAs and an International Emmy. He serves as Head of the Documentary Campus Masterschool in Berlin and co-directs the London International Smartphone Film Festival.
Accelerationism is a range of ideologies that call for the use of capitalism and associated processes to create radical social transformations.Broadly, accelerationism engages with antihumanism,as well as posthumanism,and seeks to accelerate desired tendencies within capitalism at the expense of negative ones, though variants differ greatly on which tendencies and if this will lead beyond capitalism or further into it.
